Jim Talen For County Commissioner

More Than Just Talk

Politicians like to talk. They like to make promises. They like to say what they believe in.
But I’ve always understood that actions speak louder than words.

Politicians like to talk. They like to make promises. They like to say what they believe in. But I’ve always understood that actions speak louder than words.

Politicians like to talk – about justice and system reform. But I’ve actually helped change systems as a member of the Kent County Community Corrections Advisory Board and the Michigan Task Force on Jails and Pretrial Incarceration.

Politicians like to talk – about housing issues. But I’m helping move the needle through my work with the Kent County Coalition to End Homelessness, the Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority and the Grand Rapids Affordable Housing Community Fund Board.

Politicians like to talk – about health care. But as a long-time member of our local Community Mental Health board, I’ve actually helped increase Kent County’s funding for behavioral health services.

Politicians like to say they care – about equity. But I was the lone disruptive voice that sent the first draft of the G.R. Forward plan for downtown back to the drawing board to expand its equity goals.

Politicians like to talk. Politicians like to make promises, often empty promises, without actions to back them up. But when I talk to you about my dedication to justice reform, affordable housing, health care, and equity, my words are backed up by what I’m doing and what I’ve done.

As your County Commissioner, I’ll be more than just talk.
